Silence

Well...oops. I didn't post yesterday because I had a dentist appointment in the morning and that and a walk with a friend in the afternoon seemes to take up the whoel day. I have pictures, but will have to get to them tomorrow. I am at Papa's right now...working Wed afternoon means it's hard to get much done, including occasionally blogging.

Katie is good. Sleeping is getting better, although she is still waking up at night but not for as long. Getting better.

I really enjoyed her (while I didn't blog) this morning. She was playing on her own in her toy area (aka living room). Having fun all by herself she was playing with her orange cup and making the "Ahh" sound that we make when drinking. So neat to see her play pretend already to a degree.

Anyway, Katie wants to blog and she's not very good at it so I have to run. Promise I'll try and blog with pictures tomorrow.

Sleeping

Well, it appears that a whole weekend went by and the last day I took pictures was Thursday. What was I thinking? I promise, I will try and get back in the habit of taking pictures every day. Work is throwing a kink in my pictures taking pattern.

How are you? We are good...well, pretty good. I'll get to that in a minute.

Here's Katie helping us sort laundry. Keeping her in the basket was fun for her and made it easier for us to work. Hope she doesn't get tired of this too soon. =)Thursday was actually an interesting evening...Papa and Katie picked me up after work, as usual, although in his car, not mine. (NOT usual) Turns out that a pothole Ben and I ran into a few days earlier (SO BIG) had caused a big bulge in our tire that Papa noticed (and we didn't) and he realized that we should get new tires pronto, or risk a blowout.

So we picked up Ben, drove back to Papa's to pick up our car and headed to Costco for tires. Luck was with us...tires were bought and installed within an hour! How lucky were we?! The service was great (west end Costco) and with a smile.

In the meantime, we headed across the street to a truck stop type restaurant for some dinner (luckily for Katie we had some leftover lunch in the diaperbag).

It wasn't perhaps the best dinner I've ever had, but it did the trick. And a good excuse to eat some fries...because, really, what else are you going to eat at a truck stop?
The rest of the weekend though picture-less was good. Hmm, the trick now is remembering what we did. Sat morning I went for breakfast and shopping with friends Coreen and Shelley while Ben got some quality Katie time (thanks Ben!). Can't remember what else we did Saturday...I believe we did BBQ steak and potatoes for dinner.

Sunday, Mother's Day, I did receive a lovely card and small gift from Katie (work clothes...from the gap...and on sale? You are a smart girl!). We also paid a visit to the Grandma's...G Cheryl in the morning (my goodness Katie loves that dollhouse!) and G Mary at Auntie Andrea's for dinner. We had such a tired girl for dinner because she hadn't had any afternoon nap but she did well and made it to almost 7pm until we realized we had to leave.

This leads me to the title. Katie is usually the best sleeper ever (we are so lucky). Bad news is that in the last week, probably starting when she was cranky, she started waking up once a night. And, because she was cranky and we thought something was bothering her, we picked her up sooner and more often than normal. Mistake. Big Mistake. Do Not Try This At Home. She's a quick learner this one. And it seems we have taught her, in a week, that this is What We Do. Not good. After consulting with each other and a couple of books, Ben and I have decided to go old school and sleep train her again. When she cries, we go in quickly and tell her we love her and it's time to sleep and then go. No singing, no rubbing backs or tummies (hers of course) and no picking up and rocking. Wait appropriate time interval and then repeat. So painful but we believe it's the right thing. Last night wasn't really fun and I'm glad I don't have to work today (sorry Ben). Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Remember, she is a quick learner. =)

Please, drink some extra coffee for me today, I might need it. =)

All Better!

Katie is officially back to normal. All day yesterday she was happy and perky and all adorable as usual.

We made a big mess when we ate (normal).

And had BIG smiles for Auntie Andrea (normal) who stopped by for lunch.
Katie snacked on some strawberries, yum yum.
She also received neck kisses from Auntie. Fun times.
Yesterday afternoon we met up with Joanne and the girls and went to the park. We didn't even make it to the swings because we had so much fun sticking out feet and hands in the sand. G was the only one who ate the sand though. Repeatedly. =)
We had our second night out for dinner in a row thanks to Great Grandma Lill. Grandpa Ken was there. And Grandma Cheryl, cousin Michelle and cousin Georgina. Katie was showing off her lovely Belly B. (Um, yes...see that very full tummy? We're now wondering if we overfed her a bit...she woke up at 10 last night and may have appeared to be having tummy discomfort. She eventually went back to sleep and is fine this morning. Must Not Overfeed Baby!)Georgina was impressed by Katie's ability to "beep" the fruit. Very impressed! These girls look like they're having lots of fun.
Hope you have a good Wednesday. Katie's off to Papa's this afternoon and the rest of the week so we may not post again until next week. Of course, if Katie does anything groundbreaking, I'll be sure to let you know!

Somewhat better...

Yesterday was still a bit of a rough day with Katie although she was a bit better occasionally. This morning she appears to be much more like herself. She was even willing to crawl around on the floor while I did some dishes. (yesterday that could not have happened.)

This picture was taken yesterday morning, while we were practicing standing. She looks a bit wild doesn't she? Yummy chair!
We had some yogurt for lunch and I let her make a big mess. It's called "learning to use a spoon".

The immunization shots yesterday went well. We now get shots in the arm instead of leg (which meant she had worn completely the wrong outfit...I had figured we could just take off her tights, but no, we because it was a long sleeve onesie, we had to take off her Whole Outfit. For a shot in the arms. Well I learned. (You see, it's always good to try and wear appropriate, easy to remove clothing for Drs and immunization visits...makes life easier) AND, most importantly, while I was explaining to the nurse that while Katie is an awesome little baby/girl that she had been acting up lately, Katie did her best to show off, babble and smile and be the cutest baby ever. Like a teenager. Just to prove me wrong. =)

She cried for the shots but calmed down fairly quickly. And since she didn't have an afternoon nap (not due to my lack of trying) she did this in the car:

Excuse the last shot with my finger in the way, I was at a light and trying to be quick.

Katie had a good 45 min nap in the car because we picked up dad from work and then went to Grandma Mary's for dinner. Here she is again, playing the teenager ("I'm happy with everyone but my parents"). Or perhaps it was the nap that helped.
She loves these fridge magnets...and she can find the red or green man correctly if you ask her. We were at dinner to celebrate Great Uncle Art's Birthday. (Apologies for not asking if I could post your picture Uncle Art...let me know ASAP if it's a problem!)
We love birthdays!

Miss. Crankypants

This past weekend Katie was a real Miss. Crankypants.

Here are the list of reasons why we think she might be Cranky:
1. Teething
2. Too hot when sleeping
3. Something related to her cold
4. Gas/Poop/Food related
4.5 Not eating enough
5. Specifically, maybe a peanut butter reaction?
6. Is it a full moon?
7. Who knows, but we wish babies could talk. I'm going to stop teaching her words like keys, car and bye and start working on "hurt", "tummy", "teething", and "I'm just feeling off today, thank you for asking".

She was/is getting over her cold and so am I. We cuddled and read books in blankets:
And we tried to smile but were tired instead. Katie cuddled with Dad too...Feeling sick and Cranky isn't fun. She did try and show me a new trick though (not completely new, she's done this before)...Drinking without using her hands! We're proud but with a touch of the Cranky.
We gave Katie peanut butter for the first time Saturday morning. She liked it. Not as much Pasta, but did enjoy it.
Then we went to Grandma Cheryl and Grandpa Ken's. And the Crankiness vanished!Could it be the dollhouse and other toys? Maybe it was just being at Grandma and Grandpa's. Later Saturday evening we did notice a very mild rash on Katie's body and limbs and slightly on her face. A call to the Capital Health Link found that it was likely nothing though we kept an eye out for other symptoms. She was fussy going down to sleep and we eventually took off her sleep bag and let her sleep in her sleeper only. She seemed much better after that.

Sunday we tried playing PeekABoo...It worked a bit but you could kind of tell she wasn't having as much fun as usual. She did have a pretty good nap in the morning and was all smiles when Great Auntie Gail came to visit. (do I see a pattern here? Happy with others, Cranky with parents...When did she become a teenager??) (by the way, we LOVE the new colours/numbers book!)After G Auntie Gail left it was back to being Cranky and even a new toy didn't grab her attention. We thought maybe superheros would lift her spirits...This "vintage" Spiderman T was Ben's when he was tiny. How cute! (but no, it didn't work)After dinner we knew we had to get her (and us...the cranky can be catching!) out of the house so we went to the bookstore and finally (this is really a last resort), WalMart. (we're been avoiding Walmart since we saw the movie and were not impressed...nothing wrong if YOU shop there, but we just don't really.)The Super Center Walmart was actually pretty neat. It's HUGE and has everything. You'd never need to shop anywhere else. (no comment about why you might want to though)

Katie adored the fish. And we like anything that puts Katie in a good mood. As we drove back from Walmart, Katie's eyes drooped and she fell asleep about a block away from home. Ben and I smiled and talked about really how lucky we are that his is a blip and about how much we love her even when she's a Miss. Crankypants. She slept soundly all night.

I'll keep you posted and let you know how today goes.

Big Girl Seat!

We've turned the car seat around! The first time we went for a drive Katie was very curious and excited. Not excited like swings-excited, but close.
Ben and I are excited too. No more "is she sleeping? I can't tell...". I find I'm looking at her at every stop light just because I can.

She's still sick and possibly teething...the combo has her with her fingers in her mouth constantly these days and drooling (either from teething or not being able to breath through her mouth).
While it's been nice and sunny the past few days, last night and today are very rainy. Lucky for us Katie got a new raincoat for her birthday. Thank you Grandma Cheryl and Joe!

More pictures from the weekend...

Our checkup with the Dr. yesterday was great...Katie is healthy as can be! He said not to worry about practicing walking...he said that since she demonstrated core strength (he sat her on his knee and made her unstable...if that makes sense) that she has the ability to walk, but will do whenever she wants too. No worries about when...he says some don't until they're 19 months old.

Katie also weighs 23.5 pounds and is 31 inches long.

We can also now feed her anything we eat...including Peanut Butter! Yay...can't wait to have her try some of that. She ate some strawberries yesterday and quite enjoyed them.

Katie has a bit of a cold at the moment, just the sniffles, so we're going to lie low and drink lots (of water) and hope she gets better quickly. A busy weekend will do that to a girl!

Saturday night, Papa and Grandma Mary dropped by after Katie was asleep to play Scrabble (training for a fund raiser tournament that G. Mary and I were in on Sunday. )(Which was lots of fun!)

Sunday morning we ran our 5km race for the Kidney Foundation in support of organ donation...thanks to all who donated, we had a great run! The weather was perfect and Katie enjoyed the run and had a nice nap(at the same time). There was a mascot present, to help add fun to festivities...Surprisingly, Katie wasn't afraid at all, she was very excited to see him and kept trying to touch him.
After the race (and the incident where we drove on the highway at 80km/hr with the diaper bag hanging from the side view mirror...oops!) we had one last visit with Auntie Alli.
Riding the Alligator...
And kisses and snuggles.
And Katie practiced standing with Grandma Cheryl! She's getting to be a great stander!
Sunday night (this was the busiest weekend we've had in a LONG time!) we had the pleasure of going out for pizza...a goodbye thing to friends Amy and J from strollercize who are moving to the west coast. Forgot to get a picture of them...they were quite busy visiting friends. We're hoping to see them for a playdate before they go. We did get pictures of Megan, Rob and baby D. (not great pictures because of the dim pizza place.)
The kids had lots of fun sharing cars.
Yesterday, Katie and I did manage to make it to strollercize after our appointment, only a few minutes late. It was a tough class. In the afternoon we walked to the library since it was so nice (nice enough that I wore just a sleeveless shirt and capris...no jacket!) Katie must have been warm in her t-shirt and skirt

[insert picture here...had I remembered to take one]

because she kicked off her shoes. Unfortunately right as we were crossing a street. Thankfully I was checking on her fairly often and noticed just after we finished crossing. Only a few cars ran over them before the light changed again and I could run out and save them. After that I decided it was warm enough for Katie's bare "piggies".

I almost forgot! Right before Katie's bedtime yesterday, we finally found time to turn around her car seat so she's facing forward. And we went for a quick ride around the block...she loved it! I meant to take a picture but forgot. Will do when we head out later.

Today, we will be food shopping and meal prepping for the rest of the busy work week. And buying a hairdryer as mine died suddenly last week. (...at least it lived a good long life...that thing was maybe 10 years old!)

Hope you're enjoying the weather!
